The main innovation in this year’s VAD competition section was that the call for submissions was aimed at works related to this year's theme: IMAGINING AN (IM)POSSIBLE FUTURE. At a time when the international financial system is in a deep crisis that joins the food and humanitarian crisis, we asked artists to send us their reflections on the past and imagine possible or impossible futures that can help us to visualise/imagine where we are going globally.

The VAD festival is an observatory of independent audiovisual creation that seeks excellence in the use of digital tools in emerging arts projects with a clear commitment to experimentation in terms of aesthetics and the communication with the viewer/user, but above all, in terms of their ability to connect to, flow with and contribute a particular vision to the world around us. The financial crisis, which has burst in and shaken up our day to day life with consequences that are as yet to be seen, has opened up a debate that goes further than just questioning the economic system that governs our lives. It demands that we urgently reflect on human relations, speed, consumption and sustainability in general. The works we have chosen represent the great diversity of positions that inspire contemporary artists in response to this broad theme, some in more direct and critical ways, others through works that are more personal, metaphorical or visionary.

The seventh VAD will award the following prizes:

- VAD Award to best work in competition, worth 2000 €
- Fundació Fita Award to the best work by an artist from Girona, worth 2000 €
- Metropolis Award to the best single-channel works – prizes vary according to the duration of the work.

We hope that you will find this year’s VAD program of interest to you, and that we will be able to rely on your continuing confidence in our project.
